Q:

Medical abortion, aspiration procedure, Early Abortion

A: Dear Lacy, There is no way to know whether the pill worked except by going in for a follow up visit.  With very early pregnancies like yours, the bleeding can be very lignt, so it can be confusing.  If it didn"t work, you should be given the choice to repeat the second set of pills (misoprostol) or to have a procedure. You are lucky to have been offered an aspiration procedure in this situation - it can be difficult to find a doctor who offers this simple natural option. The aspiration procedure is not invasive because there is no scraping (that is usually what causes so much pain in a surgical abortion).  If it is done correctly, you should...
Q:

bleeding after aspiration procedure, retained tissue

A: Dear April, It sounds like you have something called "retained tissue."  Sometimes even a tiny bit of tissue in the uterus can cause continued bleeding that forms clots before it comes out.  This is common, and does not have long term consequences.  Retained tissue happens most commonly with a uterus that is retroverted, or tipped back.  This is a completely normal shape, but it just makes it hard to pass tissue naturally. As far as treatment, methergine usually does not help with this situation.  The treatment is to either wait it out, and see if it will pass on its own, or to repeat a procedure.  If you are having a significant amount of bleeding and clots today, then I would give it 24 hours and see if it resolves on its own....
Q:

Abortion Pill, aspiration procedure, Early Abortion Methods, surgical abortion

A: Dear Erica, There are two early abortion methods that are safe and noninvasive: the Abortion Pill, and the aspiration Abortion procedure.  I recommend both of these methods over a surgical abortion.  The aspiration Abortion procedure is different from a surgical abortion because 1) there is no scraping; 2) there is no electric suction; 3) there is minimal discomfort so there is no need to be put to sleep; 4) there is immediate recovery; 5) it can me done in a private examination room, not an operaing room; 6) it is nonsurgical so you can eat and drink before your visit; and 7) you can resume your normal activities when you leave the office.  You can learn more about the

Q:

medical abortion failed, incomplete abortion, aspiration procedure, abortion pill, cytotec

A: Dear Marilyn, You have excellent questions. I am always impressed with women who do their research when they need to get an abortion.  Most women do not know all of their options in the area of early abortion. Here are my thoughts on your questions: 1) No - measuring the thickness of the endometrium DOES NOT correlate with retained products or incomplete abortion.  The only reason to do an aspiration abortion procedure after a medical abortion is if 1) there is a continuing pregnancy; 2) the pregnancy is over but a sac remains, and the women does not want to pass it naturally. 3) A woman experiences lengthy or heavy bleeding or continued cramping.  I would not recommend a procedure for just a...
Q:

natural abortion methods, aspiration procedure, cytotec abortion, herbal abortion

A: Dear Christa, I am so glad that you asked this question about natural abortion methods.  I am a doctor who is committed to offering the most natural abortion methods available.  That said, I am not an advocate of either herbs for ending pregnancy nor cytotec unless you do not live in a country where you can access good medical care for terminating pregnancy. The best resource for finding doctors who practice a natural approach to terminating pregnancy is: http://www.earlyabortion.com.  The best resource for herbal abortion is: http://www.sisterzeus.com. I recommend the aspiration Abortion method as the most natural way to end early pregnancy.  The aspiration Abortion procedure is a...
Q:

surgical abortion, nonsurgical abortion, aspiration procedure, early abortion

A: Dear Michelle, According to my own knowledge, having had 4 abortions does not put you at significant risk for placenta previa, but I do not have enough medical information about your history to feel comfortable answering this question.  IF you WANT the pregnancy and are considering continuing the pregnancy, you should set up an appointment with a good OB/Gyn as soon as possible who will look at your history and help you make a decision. IF you DO NOT want to continue the pregnancy, the safest way for you to end and early pregnancy is with the aspiration procedure.  The aspiration procedure is a nonsurgical method that does not utilize scraping or electric suction.  It is...
Q:

Safest Early Abortion Method aspiration procedure

A: Dear E, The most wonderful thing about the aspiration Abortion method and the Abortion Pill is that they do not cause risks for future pregnancies.  The aspiration procedure and the Abortion Pill are the safest early abortion methods.  They are both nonsurgical methods, and allow the uterus to naturally release the early pregnancy lining (which is similar to a heavy period).  Surgical abortion is extremely safe, and there is virtually no risk from getting repeat surgical abortions.  However, if you are able to get an aspiration procedure or the abortion pill, they are the safest methods, since they do not utilize scraping, electric suction, or...
Q:

Early abortions, New York City, New Jersey, aspiration procedure, early abortion, abortion pill

A: Dear Natalie, Thank you for your question about early abortions in New York City and New Jersey.  Many women are not aware that they have more options in terminating a pregnancy if they are less than 10 weeks pregnant.   My preferred method for early abortion is the aspiration procedure.  This nonsurgical, noninvasive procedure only takes a few minutes to complete.  It is a natural procedure and does not involve electric suction, scraping of the uterus, or general sedation.  Most women describe the procedure as similar to getting a pap smear.  You recover immediately, and can resume your normal activities when you leave the office....
Q:

medical abortion, safer abortion, RU486, aspiration procedure

A: Dear Dawn, Thank you for your questions regarding medical abortion and the Abortion Pill (RU486).  I have also added information on the aspiration abortion procedure. Many women are confused about their early abortion options.   Medical abortion refers to abortion induced by medications.  No instruments are used.  The abortion pill (RU486, Mifepristone)is the most effective medical abortion available.  Medical abortion with the abortion pill is effective up to 9 weeks of pregnancy, so it sounds like you are eligible to choose this option. The abortion pill is 95-98% effective.  It is a 3 step process. 1) You take one pill (mifepristone or RU486) in the doctor"s office. The first pill blocks the pregnancy...
