Q:

Do I need the CPAP?

A: I used a CPAP machine for over 10 years PRIOR to RNY surgery. So I''m havingtrouble understanding why you have to use one prior to surgery. I stoppedusing mine about 3 months after surgery. There are nose masks, nosepieces, mouth inserts, full face masks, etc.--a wide variety of air inputmethods. I used the nose piece, that completely covered my nose. The firstnight I used it, I awoke with a blister on each side of my nose. I calledthe company that brought the machine to my home, as the nose piece was notsized properly. The next one they gave me worked perfectly, and I couldsleep clear through the night without waking up. You can probably lookaround for a used machine, but then you''ll probably pay some $75 or...

Q:

Should minors be allowed to refuse life-saving medical treatment?

A: @Robert Gentel, I''m going to have to ponder this one for a while. I can hardly believe that her parents support her in this decision. @boomerang, This happened not too long ago as well, and we probably have a thread about that one. I''m not sure what I think, though. I lean to thinking of some age distinction within those who are minors. (adds, what''s the age of majority anyway? 18? 21? @Robert Gentel, That is quite a conundrum, isn''t it. Ordinarily I don''t believe that a person that young is capable of making rational life-and-death decisions for oneself. But the quotes in the story make this particular 13-year old sound so articulate and self-possessed that I feel empathy for her in this situation. If I were her father, I know I''d be in a stressful state of indecision. @Merry...

Q:

Virginia Mason Hospital (Seattle) surgeons

A: Hello EdwardL. I''ve been following this excellent forum since my journey started early in 2010. Until now I didn''t take the incentive to post but your question about Virginia Mason warrants me to get off my duff and help my fellow traveler. I''ve been a patient with Virginia Mason for some 20 + years. When I began my journey I thought about looking at other Seattle area choices. I spoke about my diagnosis with my primary care doctor who practices at Virginia Mason. Having had the same primary care doctor for most of these 20+ years I value his opinion. He spoke with me in length, after hours, one evening. He voiced his opinion that we are very fortunate in Seattle to have so many excellent choices be it Virginia Mason, Swedish, UW, Fred Hutch. He felt that treatment at any is about...

Q:

What do they use to treat sleep apnea?

A: I don''t suffer from that but the link below may be of some help to you. the mask cost around $800.00 You will use an oxygen machine at night. I was diagnosed with Sleep Apnea after my wife told me one morning that I had stopped breathing one night. I did a lot of research even before I went to my sleep study and learned quite a bit about it. By medical definition, an Apnea is when you stop breathing for ten seconds or more. There are also Hypopneas that are shorter breathing interuptions. In my sleep study, I had over 90 interuptions (both Hypopneas and Apneas) per hour. That''s well over 700 in one night. This disorder is very serious. It can increase your chance for heart attack, stroke etc. Get a sleep study and if you are diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, get...

Q:

Why are people gaining weight at the 2-5 year mark??

A: I think we do have control of this, we can make the right decision or thewrong decision for a food choice and many people do get in the comfy zone. I was 4 yrs post op yesterday and I have maintained my 90 lbs weight losswith the RNY. I really don''t see how people can gain weight, honestly, Ifeel sick to my stomach if I overeat or eat a bad food. So I don''tovereat. I eat until I am content, then I do that throughout the day. Perhaps that is why I haven''t gained weight. I know a lot of people saydon''t snack in between meals, but I can''t get 1200 calories in 3 meals, sosnacking is a good choice for me. I think it also depends on how muchweight your doctor wants a person to lose. I wasn''t so

Q:

02 Optix Contact Lenses - Dangerous Contacts!!!!!!

A: 02 Optix This is a freak accident. Occasionally a contact lens will take an aberrant osmosis, especially one just opened, and it sticks to the first layer of the cornea. If you hydrate and handle it properly it will lift and remove easily. If you tug and pull it rips the corneal surface and you have the situation you have described. Of course this is hard for the average person to resolve. But let me reassure you that the damage, even though quite painful, was very minor at worst. Actually O2 Optix is an excellent silicon-hydrogel lens. It has and excellent diffusion constant for good oxygen to the cornea, it wets nicely, resists deposits and has good optics. And, it does it all for a low cost. The situation you described might happen...

A: I went to the site you suggested. I am NOT going to bash any othercountry''s skills... BUT I will say; that regardless of where its at...
