Q:

I desire to change, but I keep falling back into old habits

A: No Yellowdog you are not kidding yourself when you say you want to change Aren''t you a Christian? Sorry, <Yellowdog>, but only the Holy Spirit can change people. goldie080 said: 1 The Spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. I too always wake up with many a plan for the day lined up and most days I never do get through most of it. I guess it''s a matter of priorities for me though because some things need to be done, no question about it, and I''ll get through it somehow, lol. What''s best is to try and divide it up, if there''s a big project to do then break it down to smaller tasks and start with that. Often...

Q:

Need support.....old habits creeping back

A: Katie- I''m sorry you are having such difficulty. I think the answer is tomake sure you are putting yourself and your health first. I think you aredoing great at having lost 63 pounds at 4 months and if you don''t make itto 100 by 6 months by doing your best, it''s not your fault and you are nota failure. Is there an OA meeting in your area? Can you talk to a sibling, friend, parent? I wish you the best. At this point I''d say professional help is more important than the 1ce aweek trip to the gym. Swap that trip to the gym for a weekly therapistappt and voila, you''ve made the time. You really need to talk this outwith a professional and the fact that you won''t make time for it istelling. Put yourself first, make time for the therapist by swapping outthe gym trip -- you can still keep your...

Q:

Is anyone else terrified of old habits

A: Great question - and very thought provoking. I''m also pre op and have thesame fears. I''m working on a 10% weight loss that is required before mysurgery. I have this very heightened awareness of my eating and ambecoming more and more aware of my problems. I too worry that surgerywon''t help them all go away. In reading people''s profiles online, I''vegotten a lot of hope. What has been important is that I see that it''s noteasy for everyone, and there are struggles. With this mindset, I think I''msetting up realistic expectations. I think the awareness that you arebuilding now will help your sucess later on. Hugs - hope all goes well. It''s good that you are thinking that way now and not setting yourself upfor unrealistic expectations. In alot of cases, mine included, my tastebuds are...

Q:

After surgery, how do I avoid falling into my old habits - snacking, wrong foods, etc

A: Terry,I am sorry that I don''t have the answer to your fabulous question. I tooam a Pre-Op (10/6 Duodenal Switch) and can''t believe this question isn''tasked constantly. Thanking you for "raising your hand" to askit! Best of Luck to you! ~Kjay~ I don''t have the total answer yet because being only 4 months post op, Istill have a long road ahead of me. But at this stage I can tell you thatbecause I can only eat very small portions before feeling incredibly full, this prevents me from overeating. I can eat more now than when I wasimmediately post-op, but it has been a gradual process, and my portions arestill very small. I am not the best person to ask the medical reasons whyit happens, but the physical tools this surgery has given me make it mucheasier to say no to foods I...

Q:

Scared that I''m going back to old habits - cutting

A: A lot of males have impulsive violent thoughts. It''s just in our nature. Anyway, I remember hearing an story that seemed to make sense to me. It went something like this; (In fact I just found it on the internet for you.) One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, ''My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.'' The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked, ''Which...

Q:

Is there anyone out there that finds that the old habits are back?

A: I have days that I think I am slipping into my old habits, but I find if Itake a walk or dig out old pictures of how I was it helps me regainfocus......feel free to e-mail if you need to chat. That''s the nice thing about WLS. You can slip a little, but not a lot. For example, last night, I made chocolate-chip cookies. My husband satthere on the couch enjoying the mushy, gushy, wonderful dessert, and Ithought (stupidly) to myself, "What''s one cookie going to hurt?" I decided to get some milk and eat a single cookie. THAT WAS A MISTAKE! I found myself slipping back into my old habits and gaining weight. It wasall thanks to a staple line disruption. I''m...

Q:

Help! I can''t stop eating!I will be one year post op in March. I have only lost 104lbs. Unfortunately, the last 3 weeks, I have probably gained 2 or 3... can''t seem to stop eating junk! It seems I can never get full! How can I get jump started again? I drink plenty of water, but I am so busy, I don''t have time to exercise like I should right now. I KNOW I eat wrong. I am one of those people who can eat ANYTHING! Nothing bothers me. Unfortunately, I am slipping back into some very bad old habits. I wake up everyday and say that "today I am going to stay on track", but by 2:00, I have started the grazing on carbs. HELP .... PLEASE!

A: Try to cut out the carbs altogether for several days and stick withprotein. Detox yourself from the carbs! They''re the ones making youcrazy. Protein shakes can also be good to help you "detox" fromthe carbs, too. Or, just say to yourself, I can have some carbs, but notuntil 8PM. Or 6PM, or however long you can hold out. But flat-outdetoxing from them is better, if you can do it. Try protein snacksinstead: nuts, beef jerky, tuna, cheeses -- so many to choose from!,pepperoni (nuke it & make pepperoni chips!), ham, shrimp, salmon(woo-hoo), and ... ANY other kinda protein food you can stand (orpreferraby like). Those carbs get us all!!...
