Q:

6 year old wood stove burn

A: I have not examined you or the patient in question, reviewed the medical record, associated laboratory studies, or imaging. What follows is offered to you for information purposes, only and does not constitute treatment.  I advise an examination from a qualified healthcare professional before undertaking any course of treatment. Just a touch of the arm against a hot stove is all that is needed to sustain a full thickness (third degree) burn.  You are treating it appropriately.  Full thickness burns require a long time to heal and can become infected quite easily.  When in doubt see a physician....
Q:

wood stoves

A: Greetings,     All the years of my childhood we would go out to the family farm to visit two maiden aunts and an uncle. They heated their small house with a wood stove burning old fence posts. They all lived well into their eighties without any lung cancer issues.     I believe that a properly vented stove would pose no cancer risk. You might add a humidifier for comfort. Thanks for being concerned about emissions as we need to take care of our planet with at least as much diligence as we take care of ourselves. Peace, Richard...

Q:

What are the effective ways in managing my 5-year old kid's asthma?

A: My friends son has asthma and she went through her house and got rid of all carpets put in tile floors..carpet harbors nasty irritants...she changed all her furniture to leather instead of fabrics, if you smoke do not do it inside the house, get hepa filters for your heat or air conditioners. When cleaning with bleach or other strong household chemicals make sure the house is well ventilated and if possible your child is out of the house. Also she got hypo-allergenic pillow covers for his bed pillow..it is a zippered cover keeps all the allergens inside away from the face-purchased at wal-mart. She also uses un-scented laundry detergent and softeners, no perfume or air fresheners either. It depends on how severe it is, and what his or her triggers are. My 5 year-

Q:

16 mo old loosing weight, diarehha, & tempature for 1 1/

A: Hello Allie, You''ve been very informative, but I have a few questions to ask. Before this whole story started, was she doing well? Is there any history of recurrent chest infection? Any abnormal hair loss or skin lesions, other the than drug allergy? Also, is the diarrhea loose and watrey or large, fatty and foul smelling? Kindly reply to these questions before we can discuss the lab workup done. This is the first time she has ever been sick enough to need antibiotics. After she was born and we brought her home she seemed to have a snotty nose a lot but that was the only symptom and my mother thought that maybe it was our wood stove so we did not think much about it. Other than that she had a few other times I took her to the doctor but...

Q:

5-1/2 month old son

A: Hello, I am not an expert on that field, but I think your son suffer allergic reactions, so you may check with your doctor to find out for what he allergic is. Even if your stove is out, much toxin from the burned wood, may still be around! What kind of wood do you regular burn? It may be a possibility for the allergy! Oxygen therapy may help your son, to clear the respiratory system. You could also try to let him sleep in an other room, you may reduce the possible allergies. And you may easier indicate what cost the allergy! I hope you can find fast a solution, as your son will suffer mentally stress. Good luck, Eric Van Wanseele...

Q:

Immune disorders and asthma.

A: Ditch the wood stove. The minute smoke particles of the burnng wood is really aggravating her lungs. Totally clean out the remaining soot or burned material from this stove and remove it totally from the home if possible. Wash out with water to trap the smaller particles as well. Don''t forget the flu pipes. I was in a house fire 30 years ago and my lungs are very sensitive to any kind of burning wood, cigarette smoke, etc. I would also recommend that you get an air purifier with an excellent filter to remove the hidden particles from the air inside your home. Also, asthma has been linked with a person being dehydrated. I read a book about Water Cures by Dr....

Q:

My nose is sore, Dry & Bleeding What Can I use?

A: Run a humidifier day and night. We heated with wood most of my life and now forced heat and I run one all night long....on ocassion in the living room during the day. But when my skin itself is bad I put vaseline on the outside of my nose, lips, between top lip and nose.....and inside my nostrils. That heals it up better than anything else. Try turning on a humidifier. You also can use a saline spray. If you don''t have a humidifier you can boil water in a tea kettle to add moisture to the air. Also, taking a hot steamy shower might help. If you have a wood stove you can leave an old fashioned tea kettle on the wood stove to boil and keep...
Q:

Please. Can you help me? Allergies?

A: If you have allergies then yes being outside can make it worse. Are you taking an inhaler for allergies or for asthma? Why can''t you go to the doctor or hospital? The hospital can not deny you and will give you what you need. If your worried about the bill once you receive it contact their billing department and ask about the income form that can either fully pay the bill or drastically lower the bill for you. You send it in with your income and they make a decision on how much if anything you will owe. Fresh air can do you good depending on the allergies. I was the same way. I use to be so bad that I have a nebulizer machine. anyway my doc put me on the hightest dose of advar 2x a day, singular, and nazonex. that worked. I no longer need to use my machine. OH did I mention that before I...
Q:

lung and related cancers

A: There is no scientific evidence that you might have some increased cancer risk of any type. In the "old" days, chimney sweeps, asbestos workers, miners, (and still), smokers are/were directly exposed every day  of their lives to extremely high doses of carcinogens and thus were at increased risk of cancers like lung and scrotum. You need not worry. However, if you are asthmatic it certainly could cause problems. Just wear one of those white filters masks when shoveling ashes. Blake has always been one of my favorite poets, but oh my!why would an Irish lit prof be reading an ENGLISH poet? Bobby Burns and Dylan Thomas, Joyce, etc.  but Blake, or Masefield?? Just kidding, my grandfather was Welsh....

Q:

Sunday and time for Koffee Klatch

A: Chutz, I love to cook. But my husband cooks a lot. He is a really good cook. He use to work in a deli and cater food. So he knows a lot of tricks to making things appealing. I do cook more than I was. But in my first marriage, I was up at 3:30 every morning preparing breakfast and lunch for my husband and then had supper on the table when he got home from work. So this is like a vacation for me. I use to grind coffee from beans every morning with an old grinder that is over 100 years old. Talk about fresh coffee. And a sore arm. lol... Good topic Chutz as usual. I don''t know how you keep coming up with something interesting every day. But you do and it is a blessing to the forum. Hugs, Karen 15!) So we eat a lot of real simple meals, with...
