Q:
What is a prolapsed disc?
A: A prolapsed disc may also be called a slipped disk or a herniated disc. Those familiar with other hernias may understand this last term better. Hernia is often thought of as a bulging or extrusion of tissue, where it doesn’t belong. The prolapsed disc is similar, though it occurs in the discs of the spine. The spine has special cushioning between each vertebra, and these are called discs. discs have a soft center called the nucleus pulpous, and then a harder outer ring. Sometimes, that soft center breaks through the outer ring and extrudes out, which can put pressure on other structures in the...

Q:
What Are the Most Common Symptoms of a prolapsed disc?
A: Although symptoms vary from person to person, back pain is the most common symptom of a prolapsed disc. Depending on the location and size of the prolapsed disc, or slipped disc, a person can have severe pain or can be completely asymptomatic. If pain is involved, it typically comes on suddenly.. The pain may be isolated in the back but, in the case of nerve root pain known as sciatica, pain runs down the leg, sometimes as far as the calf. The two sciatic nerves are made up of smaller nerves that originate from the spinal cord. Each sciatic nerve runs down a leg, which is why nerve pressure from a prolapsed disc can...

Q:
Exercise for someone with a prolapsed disc? advice please?
A: Cathy, you are asking an excellent question. A prolapsed disc is a disc that has collapsed thus allowing the vertebrae above to come down on the lower one. This narrows the space that the nerves have to exit and allows the bones, vertebrae, to rub together creating degeneration. An exercise program is an excellent choice as a means to lose weight. The best way to do this is by cutting out all fried foods, all lunch meat and processed foods, no sugar, no sodas, and most of all no white flour products. Do that and you will lose weight. As for the treadmill I would tell you to forget that purchase. The shock that is transmitted from the platform of almost all treadmills is significant. This force is sent up the legs...

Q:
Exercise for someone who had a prolapsed disc, advice please?
A: You definitely need to see someone other than a physiotherapist. What you are calling a prolapsed disc is actually a herniated disc. It can affect the sciatic nerves which can cause you to have lower back and hip pain, and leg twinges/pain.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herniated-d…
You need to speak with someone who specializes in physical therapy and get a list of exercises that you can perform without causing further damage to your back.
DO NOT do any heavy lifting. Hope you lose the weight because that alone will help your back pain....

Q:
Sequestered prolapse discs
A: /
Dear Lesely,
Acute cauda equina syndrome is usually treated on an emergent basis. Opinions differ as to the exact timing, but most agree that surgery should be done within the first 48 hours. Root compression syndromes without neurological deficit can be treated surgically months after the onset of symptoms.

Q:
X-ray to investigate a prolapsed disc
A: Your concern about anX-ray isunderstandable. There is a move these days in medicine to avoid doingunnecessary X-rays and doctors are under pressure to reduce the number ofX-rays they do, both to reduce the radiation given to patients, and to reducepressure on X-ray departments. X-raying women of childbearing age is certainly something toavoid if possible, but sometimes it is necessary. Added to this is the fact that doctors have been advised thatX-rays for back pain rarely show any abnormality, and so doing one does notinfluence management. It is almost impossible to diagnose aslipped disc on aplain X-ray. However it does depend on circumstances. You do not say how longyou have you had the pain, or whether you have had any other symptoms, such aspain or...

Q:
prolapsed disc and thecal sac
A: Hi Scottish Lass and welcome to Healing Well''s chronic pain forum. I am so sorry that you are having such a bad time with your health. I am in the states so I have no idea what it is like for you to get medical care but it does not sound very good to say the least. At least by coming here you can visit with others that have CP too and know you are not alone. Sometimes it makes us feel that way. I don''t really know what the drs will think of your MRI report. Most drs here will not do surgery here on a small bulging disc/small central disc protrusion. They will do conservative care at best. Your disc problem is one level above the bottom disc. I do hope the drs are able to do something for...
