Q:

What are some good remedies for social anxiety, specifically in a high school environment?

A: antidepressants. Meditation, Humming music, whistling, breathing exercises based on Yoga, actually you can do yoga anyplace even standing still. Study up on it. Martial arts after school will help build your confidence along with other sports and exercise. excercise more The best thing to do is just take a deep breath and realize you''re not alone! Lots of kids have this. You''d be surprised at how many. Having confidence in high school is hard! Just rely on your friends...you don''t have to be all loud and social...just be *there*. The more you''re around people, the easier it gets. I know it''s hard...I''ve totally been there. But realize that you can go home and be safe and sane and alone, and recharge for the next time you have to be out in a

Q:

What natural cures are available for social anxiety Disorder or social Phobia?

A: SAD isn''t going to go away through medication (natural or otherwise)—you''re going to have to put in real work in a therapeutic setting. Cognative Behavioral Therapy (CBT) has been very effective in treating SAD, as it works on changing the cognitions that lead to the behaviors. Wherever you are, there should be trained practitioners of CBT. St.John''s Wort I agree that therapy is the road to understanding the fears behind the phobia. But more than intellectually understanding, you have to really go back to the time these things began, identify the source—what happened at the time—and confront it. Since it is likely very very upsetting and scary, this is very hard work. Some people spend their whole lives running—never really stopping to figure out why. The good...

Q:

Is this social anxiety?

A: JanaK- It''s great that you have been researching this. Based on what you are describing I tend to agree with your impression that this is not social anxiety disorder in it''s typical form. You did not mention that the anxiety is created by the thought of interacting with or speaking in front of others. But you mentioned ''the irrational fear and panic.'' How would you describe the fear? What is it a fear of? The answer to this question is important in making the diagnosis. If you haven''t been evaluated by a trained mental health professional please do so. In particular, see if you can find one that specializes in anxiety disorders.   Rick Wirtz   Rick Wirtz is a...

Q:

If one has self-medicated for social anxiety their whole life, then stops and the anxiety returns, will it eventually subside?

A: I''ll leave out the TMI/personal experience. It won''t subside without some sort of professional help. It doesn''t have to be therapy—just a visit to a primary care doctor to get some sort of medication can be a huge help. I wish I could tell you how long it lasts, or that it will stop tomorrow. Truth be known I''m still trying to figure it out myself. I am/have been in therapy for years now and still suffer from severe anxiety and depression. Sometimes I think self medicating was so much easier and cheaper. anxiety is best over come with a professional to guide you. My question would be: Have you solved why you turned to addiction in the first place? What is the underlying issue? Has that been properly dealt with? I''m still working...

Q:

Handling social anxiety

A: Hi, and thanks for your medical question on eHealth forum! There are a few steps that you can yourself practice. Take up yoga, deep breathing exercise, walking and remain strong and determined in your effort to do away with this fear and anxiety. Music and aerobics are also good stress busters. Drink plenty of fluids and water (not caffeine), eat fresh fruits and vegetables and keep yourself busy throughout the day. The other method is to go for cognitive behavioral therapy. This helps you to analyze the cause of your anxiety and teaches you to alter your thinking process. Psychodynamic psychotherapy is another option that helps of unconscious mental conflicts raging in you. You need to discuss this with your doctor and get help from a...

Q:

I use drinking to manage social anxiety.

A: How can I cut back/quit and just learn to deal with my social phobias? Might not be much help to you, but when I start finding myself drinking more quickly because I''m nervous, I move onto pints of soda water instead of lager. Its still a crutch, of course, but it''s cheaper, doesn''t get you smashed and rehydrates you. Of course, this only really helps if you like soda water, so YMMV...

A: If your child is an only child and isn''t around children that much you should really look into sending your child to a day care once a week or a play group. There are also clubs for Mom''s where you can take your kids to play together. She will loose the anxiety in time. Dont worry it could just be a phase, keep up the playdates and meet up with friends who have kids, when they see you having fun with friends, they will too. Q:

social anxiety Disorder - how many of you out there have to use benzos to be able to control your?

A: I have taken Ativan for my anxiety. I was on it for four months, as needed. If your doctor has prescribed benzodiazepines for your condition, and you are taking them as prescribed, then there is really no problem for you. I learned some very good coping skills to circumvent an anxiety attack, and therefore no longer need the Ativan to deal with them. THey did help until my therapy taught me other ways. If the doctor told me I still needed it, then I would certainly not hesitate to take as prescribed. Good luck! My husband has very severe major depressive disorder, anxiety disorder and agoraphobia (fear of leaving his home mainly; its affect varies) and is prescribed Paxil and lorazepam daily. He has been affected...

Q:

How to deal with social anxiety (without medication!)

A: Have you ever tried any natural remedies? There are many good ones at the health food stores, and some of them work really well, without that drugged up feeling. I know what you mean. I have been in situations like that, and although I thought I was listening to the person talking, I really didn''t hear anything they were saying because I felt anxious. I''ve missed some pretty important things because I''ve tuned out. Things like someone giving me instructions or directions. I don''t know if you''re into this, but my sister swears by it, and I''ve done some myself, and it seems to help. Yoga and/or meditation help for anxiety. Also other kinds of excersise could help too. You might even want to try acupuncture. I''ve seen it help some people. i think you need to...
