Q:
I had this surgery done in August 03. All tests have come back clear since this time, and I feel great. I noticed a change in scar tissue, and my breast and sentinel node scar were hurting. Surgeon said it was all normal after exam, but sent me for ultrasound to be super safe and everything looked fine. He told me to start the stretching exercises again, raising arm over head, and I must admit I really never did them, ever. Said scar tissue needs to be stretched out, etc. So started stretching a week ago. Today my armpit hurt when I woke up. When I raise my arm over my head, I can see a vein that now stands out and feels too short, running from near sentinel node scar, to 3 inches above armpit. Raising arm over head makes it stand out and stretches it painfully. Reminicent of what the inside of my arm was doing for a few months after my chemo. Couldn''t straighten arm out without feeling the vein stretch and stand out inside the elbow. Oncologist said that would go away and it did. (I didn''t have a port)If I continue to stretch my arm over my head will this go away? I am a fit, 39 year old. Hate to bother doctor again if this is something that will disappear in a month with continued stretching. I assume it is a reaction to the stretching exercises and old, sentinal node surgery. Thank you.
A: When exercising doesn''t begin fairly soon after surgery, bands of scar can form in the armpit area. the feel and look under the skin like rubberbands and are very painful. sometimes a physical therapist is needed to help ''break up'' this scar tissue using moist heat and stretching motion so ask your doctor about a referral perhaps....

Q:
How can i relieve my back pain without pain pills?
A: Exercises/stretches. I went to my doctor for back pains, and she gave me some papers on exercises/stretches, and instructions and all that...because of my age, she didn''t give me any pain killers...So, the best thing to do is go to your doctor, because they know exactly what exercises/stretches will help your back, and can give you information on them. Also, they may even recommend a therapy place you can go to, where they actually talk you through the exercises and stretches, as well as make sure you are doing them properly....If you attempt to do them on your own, you could end up making your back pain worse. Heating pads work for me from time to time. back pain is a sign if either muscle...

Q:
I''ve had knee pain for about 4 months now. I don''t know what happened or exactly when it happened. It is very noticeable when I fully squat down and have weight on my right knee. I seem to be able to walk and even run without pain. I do notice that when I aggravate it by running or walking it does start aching. The main problem is the pain when I squat down and have the knee bent fully. The pain seems to be somewhere in the knee, but it''s hard to say a specific place or side. I can even squat past 90 degrees without any pain, it is when I''m go all the way down that it hurts. Also when I lie down and pull my leg and knee into my chest and then pull my foot inside to the left (on my right knee) it will hurt. I feel pressure in my knee when I do this. I''ve tried ibuprofen and I have rested it for over a month and it still is hurting. It may be somewhat better now that it was a couple months ago, but it still has the pain in it. Can you help me?
A: You may have strained/pulled something, or you could have something a little more serious like tendonitis. It sounds like perhaps a brace would be able to help you. You should contact an orthopaedist or sports doctor for treatment. thanks anonymous, I may have strained something, but I would think that in a 4 month period of time it would be well. It's weird, I mean, I could probably do squats with a barbell and weights and it wouldn't hurt as long as I don't squat down all the way. It might get achy after though. What is it? Maybe I need an xray to make sure it isn't a tumor in my knee or something. You could have torn some cartilage on the outside of your right knee. I have torn cartilage on the inside of my left knee and it doesn''t cause me much

Q:
Fibromyalgia without pain?
A: Fibromyalgia has been studied since the 1800s and there have been many conclusive studies that have shown that - potentially - those of us who have all the pain symptoms actually have had Fibromyalgia our entire lives, but the pain portion didn''t begin (or wasn''t "onset") until some sort of trauma. This being said, I urge you to retrain your mind to let go off all worries and do everything you can to learn to direct your stress properly. The Dalai Lama stated: "If you have fear of some pain or suffering, you should examine whether there is anything you can do about it. If you can, there is no need to worry about it; if you cannot do anything, then there is also no need to worry." I suggest...

Q:
Muscle spasm without pain?
A: I doubt a muscle spasm would cause close lock as I tend to consider a spasm as an event or episode much like a cramp or charlie horse, muscle tic or twitch or jerk. But a constricted or atrophied muscle might be the problem - I guess what the dentist is saying is you are stuck with a muscle spasm that did not release? At one point I had closed lock for 3 days and it did feel like I was also clenched shut on the side that would not open - I even had trigger point injections to help relieve it which did not work - but what actually helped relieve it was a bite adjustment - so i guess in a way it was due to an issue with a muscle - not sure it was a spasm per se but the muscle had become so taut or tightened that it would not relax. Have you had an MRI or tomogram done - you may want to know...

Q:
How do you relieve a headache without pain medication?
A: 1. something with caffeine in it, like chocolate or soda. there is even caffeinated gum 2. take a nap and it will be okay or just forget about it 3. pinch the part of your hand that''s between your index finger and thumb. right on that muscle part between them, if u know what im saying. apparently that''s what ancient chinese people would do. 4. Chocolate, especially dark chocolate, always helped to relieve my headaches when there was no aspirin around. 5. There are many things you can do: Take a shower, it relaxes you. Take a bath in epsom (think that''s how you spell it!), you can find it at Trader Joes. It relaxes your muscles too! Put your fingers up between the ridge of your eyes (hard to explain) and that automatically relieves it! Stay hydrated! Hope this helps you! 6. I had...

Q:
Legs go numb when i stretch
A: you may have a pulled or torn hamstring (aka hammie). This is very common, but is in fact painful when you do it. You may have done it while stretching if you do not play sports. There is nothing you can do to fix it, it will heal itself. Just take some Advil, Tylenol, or otherwise and it will go away in a few weeks. I would not suggest stretching for a while. Doing nothing is a very bad idea! This will not simply go away by itself, and masking the pain of inflexibility is NOT the way to correct it! That is a recipe for even greater problems, down the line! You need to check out pain Free by Peter Egoscue- that book talks about how to increase balance, flexibility,...
