Q:

teenagers

A: Hi Liz, Thanks for your question.  It is a question which could take a book to answer.  However I will try to be brief. I think that magazines, films, and television send the WRONG messages to teenage girls. There is an aspect of current culture that extols the virtues of discontent.  Discontent with body shape, clothes, accessories, hair colour and length - in fact almost everything.  There is also too much concentration on the sexual exploits of film stars, pop stars and footballers. Every woman "must" be slim, big breasted, have perfectly coloured hair and have long legs.  If they aren"t, girls are encouraged to do something about it - go on diets, have plastic surgery, continually to change their...

Q:

How Can I Repair Damaged Hair?

A: A single hair is composed of three layers: the innermost medulla, the middle cortex and the outer cuticle. Damage to any one or all of these layers causes hair damage. Obvious signs of hair damage are brittle, dry and dull-looking hair. Split ends, tangles and hair loss are common in damaged hair. So is it possible to repair damaged hair? In truth, damaged hair cannot be repaired. It can be treated with various haircare products or home-made remedies to improve its look, but these measures are only a temporary fix and must be frequently repeated for the effects to last. The only real way to repair damaged hair is by cutting off the damaged parts and letting new growth take place. However,...

Q:

HELP I need advise on Head Lice!?

A: They hatch 1-2 weeks after the eggs are laid. The adult lice can live up to 3 days off the scalp. My daughter had them when she was little. I did the over the counter treatment, picked out the eggs from her hair one by one (took a long time) and washed everything she came into contact with. Anything that couldn''t be washed I put into garbage bags and sealed tight for a week or so. That was long enough to kill any adults that may have been lurking about. Even after they were gone I repeated the over the counter treatment just to be sure... I even treated myself just in case... spray Lavender oil on her pillow before she goes to bed and also rub it into her hair after every shower Buy one of those over the counter shampoos and use the nit...

Q:

Getting rid of lice?

A: You need to continue the RID lice shampoo treatments exactly as it says on the box, including repeating the treatment every 10 days. Also, as a little tip, free of charge, giggle, people with the cleanest hair tend to get the lice the easiest. If you wash your gal''s hair every day, then change it to every other day. Put a little hairspray on her hair, keep her hair in a pony tail, or ''angle wings'' (two pony tails). If you live in the US your school should be required to check for lice if you report it to the NURSE. Also, they should not let your daughter back in to school if she even has as much as one nit in her hair. Lice is very common. Most people think of it as a ''dirty'' bug, but actually the cleaner the kid, the more common the lice. You must follow the directions on the RID...

Q:

Have I forgotten anything for summer camp?

A: That is way too much stuff for a 5 day camp! Your camp should have given you a packing list, pack off of that. I''m not sure what type of activities you are doing but unless they said you need "office supplies" you don''t need them. Maybe bring a pen, pencil and paper. Also if you are living outside (cabin, tent, etc) you don''t need make- up, hair stuff beyond hair ties and a brush. I personally think that you should probably re- think everything you are bring, you are living home for less then a week not a year!...

Q:

Feeling of pressure on the left side of chest and..

A: Hello there - OK, let''s see. You were having trouble breathing and responded well to what we''ll assume was a puff or two of albuterol. You have a family history of asthma and the doctor prescribed a bronchodilating inhaler for you, which seems to be working. I hate to be sarcastic about your doctor, who may have been splitting some semantic hairs, but it would seem you do have asthma, at least according to everything you''ve written here. Of course there are other problems which can cause bronchoconstriction, but essentially that''s asthma, even if it is secondary to some other problem. It really sounds like that''s one part of your collection of things, and the rest certainly fit in well with the diagnosis of...

Q:

Is it OK for my 6-1/2 yr. old son to play with dress up clothes & wigs? He hides this fact from us

A: I am afraid if you had embarrassed him already that he might develop a complex over it. You should bring it out in the open and be comfortable with it and it will seem to him, not a big deal. He might be into it because it has become taboo and if you make it not taboo the urge to hide it will dissipate. I don''t think you should ignore it at all because he is struggling with it and he needs to know its ok and that it isn''t a naughty thing to do. People of all ages do unusual things at times that are not explainable. I just know that if a mother disagrees with a natural expression it can be scaring for life. My sister let her 8 yr old dress up like a girl for halloween and there hasn''t been much of it since because she didn''t make a big deal of it. People

Q:

I thought she was a woman: My real-life crying game

A: Dear Really concerned and confused, First, a couple definitions: Cross-dressers are people who sometimes or always wear clothing and accessories traditionally sported by another gender — it''s something they enjoy. Crossdressers usually identify as their biological sex, and many male crossdressers are heterosexual. Transsexual folks feel their assigned or anatomical sex isn''t the same as the gender and related roles they identify with. Some may undergo hormone therapy and/or surgery to cause biological and physical appearance changes. Intersex people are born with an ambiguous biological sex. The old word for someone who is intersex is hermaphrodite, but intersex is now considered more respectful. People born...
