what if a cirrohis patient has end stage liver disease and has high ammonia levels that caused the patient to be asleepand incoherent, will the patient be able to overcome this?

A: Hi, Welcome to AMD. The stage you are talking about is called "hepatic encephalopathy". Normallyliver functions as detoxifier of body (toxins are metabolized in liver to harmless forms). In cirrhosis andsevere liver damage , these toxins (like you said ammonia) are not flushed out of body and they accumulate inbrain leading to progressive brain damage. It is potentially a reversible condition (if damage is not severe)but it can not be said for sure. It is also dependent on electrolyte balance of the patient (sodium, potassiumlevels)...

end stage liver Disease

A: Your end stage liver disease is most likely causing your weight gain as ascitic fluid builds up in your abdomen. If you are eating correctly (i.e. plenty of whole grains, reasonable amounts of dairy, small amounts of [lean] meats and fatty foods and NO alcohol] then it willbe very easy for your doctors to determine whether the weight gain is from eating poorly or continued liver faiilure. Your best option as you continue to worsen is probably a liver transplant but it is unfornutate that the need for liver transplants...

Sodium and end-stage liver Disease

A: angiesmommy, Hi and welcome to the forum. When someone is in end stage liver disease the liver can''t filter out toxins and sodium (among other things). The kidneys are frquently affected by liver disease so instead of eliminating the sodium it is retained in the bloodstream. If it can''t be eliminated it is stored and thus the sodium levels go up. He is holding fluid as a result of it. Noncompliance with his treatment is not unusual but EXTREMELY frustrating for the...

Hepatitis C: what happens in end-stage liver disease?

A: The hepatitis C virus slowly damages the liver — often over the course of several decades. As a result, end-stage complications of hepatitis C include liver failure and liver cancer. These conditions primarily occur in people who develop permanent scarring of the liver (cirrhosis) due to inflammation caused by the hepatitis. About 20 percent of people with hepatitis C develop cirrhosis, usually within 10 to 30 years after infection.  Of those who have cirrhos

cirrhosis,varicies, end stage liver disease

A: Hello, MissVicki and welcome to the forum!  I''m glad you decided to post.  I am so glad that your husband stopped drinking and is on the transplant list.  It is remarkable that he is working.  liver disease makes one sooo fatigued.  So it could be that he is just sick and tired of being sick and tired.  I think that''s understandable.  is he taking any antidepressants?  That might be something that would help.  I hate to see him ''give up'' after having been through so much, and there is also the...

Normal ultrasound and still an end stage liver disease?

A: Chris, I just wanted to welcome you to the forum and say I am sorry you are not feeling well. I know that blood tests can be fairly normal and a person can have cirrhosis, but I am not sure about a normal ultrasound. I have been told that the only way to know for sure if a person has cirrhosis is by biopsy. My husband had biopsy''s every couple of years. They all came back normal until has last one two years ago. The cirrhosis was pretty advanced. There are alot of knowledgable people here that may be able to answer your question. I will pray that you find the answers to your health problems and that you are cured soon. be the problems there...
