Q:

what to expect from Pineal Cyst and other findings on MRI?

A: Hello -- The findings are fairly nonspecific, but since you have been having some symptoms the neurosurgeon will probably want to explore ways of further determining what the findings represent. Some of them, such as the bright areas, may be fluid, and the possible reasons for that are myriad. Since the radiologist wasn''t able to decipher them they may be of no consequence or there may be some fluid accumulation due to some process or injury which the neurosurgeon might be better equipped to identify. The pineal cyst is probably not a major concern as they rarely are, and yours is very small. It could be related to...

Q:

My mother is in the last stages of life with a butterfly Glioblastoma mainly in her frontal lobe. The doctors gave her only a few weeks to live. That was 4 months ago. She is in a hospice facilty, not talking or communicating at all. But her vitals are all normal and she is eating well. Can anyone else who has faced something similar tell me what to expect?

A: No one can predict what will happen from here. She could begin to shut down tonight and be gone tomorrow, or she could still be in the same state in another 4 months. As things do progress, the doctors and nurses should be able to keep you posted on any changes in her condition. I''m so sorry you have to go through this. Take care and GOD Bless. I have looked in many places for some advice on this cancer. Grade 4 Glioblastoma multiforme. My husband was diagnosed and was debulked on 22nd January 2007. He has since had another debulking on 17th August. His cancer is now growing down in

Q:

My mom is 53 years old and has been fighting breast cancer since 1999. From 2001 until about 2003 she was told she was in remission, but the cancer actually was still travelling through her body. In 2003 my mom found a lump on her neck that felt like a swollen gland. It turned out to be cancerous, and the doctor told us at that point it was metastatic breast cancer that had ''spots'' on her bones, and lungs. Since 2003 my mom has tried many different types of chemo, but none of them worked. She has also developed lumps (some as big as a quarter) all over her chest, back and neck that are also cancerous (but according to the doctor, they are not particularly harmful directly to her health). About 3 or 4 months ago we noticed that one of these ''lumps'' was near her right eye. The doctor did a MRI or CT scan and found out that she has cancerous involvement in her ''brain meneges?'' (the neurological lining of the brain, and behind her right eye). My mom had full brain radiation and radiation behind her eye to hopefully reduce the cancer so it didn''t cause her to go blind, or have other brain problems....this seemed to work and we were looking more hopeful. Aside from everything my mom has remained fairly independent. She has lived alone (although I spend most of my time when I''m not at work with her, and spend as many nights as possible) and she has continued to spend time with friends and family. On Sept 2nd 2005, my mom had intense stomach pain and was rushed to the hospital. It turned out she had a peferated ulcer and if she didn''t have surgery would die within the hour. She made it through the surgery (with about an 8 inch incision from under her breasts down to her lower abdomen), but overall we were hopefull that she would get a little better and be able to go home. She stayed in the hospital for 11 days, and finally went home (after they removed the stiches etc). after 1 day of being home, my mom was nauseaus and vomited, and her entire incision opened up (I could see all of her intestines, liver, etc inside of her....I was never so afraid in my life).Back at the emergency room we received grim news. Because of the raditation she had received a couple of years ago to her stomach, and from the tumors on her skin, along with the lack of white blood cells, she was simply not able to heal and they could not stitch her up. So, they did another surgery to put a sponge along with a vacuum type devise into her stomach (VAC-Vacuum assisted closing) and she is now in a rehab facility close to my house because she has such swollen legs and pain in her spine (from the cancer) she cannot get out of bed on her own.She is on a lot of pain mediciation, and in the past couple of days will not eat because she just vomits when she eats...actually, she is vomiting even when she doesn''t eat.My mom and I have discussed that we want nature to take it''s course, and for her not to suffer through anymore painful surgeries. We also have a Health Care Proxy so that she will not be kept alive on ventilators or tubes.I am 24 years old, and her only child and she was a single mom. I am very honestly scared to lose my mom. I know that must sound so selfish, but I really will miss her. We have actually grown much closer since her recent surgery and I think in some strange way this process has brought us closer. I think I have accepted that she will probably die soon, but she has not truly accepted that (or maybe she has, and is trying to be strong for me)...who knows. Either way, everyday she talks to me about ''finding a cure'' so she can go home and work in her garden and watch me get married someday and play with her future grandkids someday. It breaks my heart to know that she probably won''t see these events unfold.after hearing our story...can you please give me some idea of what to expect in the upcoming days, weeks, months? Also, do you think we have days, weeks or months? I know you can not give me an exact answer, but it would help me to know (based on your experience) how much time you think my mom will be here...so I can start to prepare myself mentally for what is to come. Thank you for your time...

A: I''m so sorry to hear of your mom''s situation but glad you are at her side. it sounds like she is very ill. only her doctors can give you a sense of how long she has though. please ask them about getting hospice involved to help both you. a wonderful organization that assists patients and families with end of life issues. consider doing a breast cancer walk in your mom''s honor in oct......

Q:

Will weight loss after the surgery help my life long depression go away?

A: I myself dont know what came first the weight or the depression but I willsay this..Im only 7 weeks post op and I ALREADY feel better then everbefore..between depression meds the surgery and therapy I havent ever beenhappier :) Greaaaaat...a person whose symptoms include hopelessness asking if there ishope. Unfortunatly, Sharon, I don''t think weight loss surgery will lift abiological depression, particularly one that is chronic and recurrent. Weight loss, however, will get rid of one thing that has you feel bad aboutyourself if being overweight lowers your self esteem. Weight loss willalso help you to be more physically active, which can help level outdepression. But as someone who takes an antidepressant, I can...

Q:

Husband starts radiation next - what to expect?

A: If you don''t find what you need here , try looking on the *********** FORUM.. Lot of radiation stories there. Hi Lynne, Your husband''s original numbers seems to be just like my husbands. My husband was diag in Dec 05 with a PSA of 30 - 32 and a Gleason 9. We were told surgery wouldn''t help with his numbers and some form of treatment could be expected from here on end. It sounded so bad and I couldn''t realize how because he had no symptoms - nothing. He just went for a regular check up at the VA. My husband had 9 weeks of radiation and got the Viadur 1 year hormone implant. He got his 2nd Viadur implant in Dec 06. Between the...

Q:

Clean EEG''s what to expect?

A: Usually people will not suddenly have a clean EEG after years of abnormal ones. Thank you for response. Hello, Does her MRI show anything as far as abnormalities? We found that our daughter''s (age 16 and diagnosed at age 9 months) were originating in the Hippocampus area (memory center) and were able to perform surgery on June 7th of this year. She is on medication yet, but has been seizure free since. She did have memory decline, but was not in any special ed classes. Katie was also considered intractable. She had been on 7 different medications and combos of those meds. Never more than dual therapy, by our choice. Each med carries its own set of issues. They can hinder the memory process. Are you seeing a regular...

Q:

I am still deciding what to do about my surgery.

A: Hi - You won''t decrease your risk of recurrence by having a double mastectomy, as breast cancer doesn''t travel from one breast to the other. You''ll reduce your risk of breast cancer in btoh breasts by about 90%, though; not entirely, as some breast tissue always remains after a mastectomy.   Your risk is that the cancer may have spread out of your breast; that''s why you''re getting chemo, which will hopefully take care of any cells that have spread. Tamoxifen would continue to thwart any cancer cells in  your body; so if you don''t take tamoxifen, you''re increasing your risk of recurrence, which can occur in your bones,...

Q:

Already in bone metastasis - what to expect ?

A: HI I''m sort of confused. what did they biopsy if nothing is seen in the lungs? A ct scan should be done, then a pet scan. That will give a better idea of what is going on where. Even with a smoking history, if there are no tumors in his lungs, then it''s not lung cancer. Usually a biopsy is done on a suspicious nodule or mass. Were there any found? If you aren''t getting answers from the oncologist, and don''t like him (and if your father doesn''t) get a second opinion! Best of luck Hi and thanks for the answer ! I went through all his exams today ... he had a CT scan, which said something like "investigate dark areas in the upper right lung".
